Look at the vehicle as a whole
A pre-purchase assessment should explain what was examined, under which conditions, and what needs further investigation. The aim is to document observations and explain remaining uncertainty.
- Bodywork and chassis: visible signs and contextual paint readings.
- Engine and transmission: observable operation, noises and traces.
- Electronic diagnostics: accessible control units and fault context.
- Road test: only when access, safety and permission allow.
The limits are part of the assessment
Electronic diagnostics cannot reveal every internal component. Without dismantling, some areas remain inaccessible. No visible anomaly does not mean that hidden faults or future failures are excluded. Agree the practical scope before the visit.
Prepare the right information
Gather the make, model, location, owner’s contact and available records. Ask about inclusions, exclusions, travel costs and report arrangements. A pre-purchase inspection does not replace any applicable statutory vehicle test.
