MILEAGE & HISTORY

Checking a car’s mileage: compare the evidence

Detecting odometer tampering is not a one-sign test. A check looks for inconsistencies; it cannot always certify the true distance travelled.

Build a timeline

Compare the displayed mileage with available dated records such as maintenance invoices and previous inspections. Ask the seller to explain differences. An incomplete timeline remains a limitation even when no backwards reading is found.

Put wear in context

Wear on controls and interior surfaces can raise questions, but it varies with use and parts may have been replaced. Compare it with records and other observations rather than making an allegation from one photograph.

Explain remaining uncertainty

Depending on the model, electronic information may be inaccessible or insufficient to reconstruct the full history. A report should distinguish values that were read from conclusions that can actually be supported. An inconsistency alone is not proof of fraud.

This is general reading guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular vehicle. The vehicle and agreed scope determine the service.
