Engine checks before buying: what to clarify

Observing how a vehicle operates provides useful information within the agreed access and conditions.

Understand the inspection conditions

Ask whether the vehicle was observed at start-up or only when warm, what could be accessed and whether a road test was permitted. Any check that could not be completed should remain clearly identified.

Read observations together

Noises, visible traces, warning lights and electronic information should be considered together. A photograph does not establish the source of a trace on its own. Further investigation may be needed before a conclusion or repair.

Respect limits and safety

Unless specifically agreed otherwise, a pre-purchase inspection is non-destructive. It does not automatically reveal internal wear. Do not carry out checks on hot or moving engine parts; have suitable checks performed by a professional.

This is general reading guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular vehicle. The vehicle and agreed scope determine the service.
