REPORT & DECISION

How to read a used-car inspection report

A useful report connects a finding with an area, method and limitations. It should help you ask informed questions.

Start with the scope

Check the vehicle identification, date, available records and checks performed. Find exclusions and uncompleted checks before reading the summary.

Read photographs with their captions

A photograph records an observation but may not prove its cause. Look for the distinction between measurement, interpretation and recommendation. A colour or score does not replace an explanation.

Turn uncertainty into a next step

When a point is uncertain, ask what additional examination could help clarify it. Consider new information from the seller. The purchase decision remains yours; a report cannot guarantee every future aspect of performance.

This is general reading guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular vehicle. The vehicle and agreed scope determine the service.

Your next car deserves a closer look.
